What does ISO 29148 require?
It requires three requirements processes, four information items and the content of those items. It also sets the characteristics of a well formed requirement and of a requirement set, the language rules, the attributes and the management activities that keep the set under control.
The processes
A conforming project implements business or mission analysis, stakeholder needs and requirements definition, and system or system/software requirements definition, as defined in 15288 or 12207. The three produce the requirements baseline that architecture and design then allocate and trace.
The information items
The project produces a business requirements specification, a stakeholder requirements specification, a system requirements specification and, where 12207 applies, a software requirements specification. Each has required content in clause 9. The Annex A operational concept content is part of a full conformance claim.
The quality rules
Each requirement has to be necessary, appropriate, unambiguous, complete, singular, feasible, verifiable, correct and conforming. Each set has to be complete, consistent, feasible, comprehensible and able to be validated. Open To Be Defined, Specified or Resolved items prevent a set from being complete. The language rules keep shall, should, may and will distinct and remove vague and open ended terms.
The management
Requirements are identified, versioned, owned, prioritised, risk rated, rationalised, typed and verified. They are traced in four directions, put under configuration control, changed through an impact assessment, kept as managed information and measured for quality, quantity and volatility.
