ISO 29148 third edition: what is known, and what is not

ISO/IEC/IEEE DIS 29148 is Edition 3 of the requirements engineering standard. It is in the enquiry phase: the DIS ballot was initiated on 14 September 2026 for 12 weeks. It is not published, it cannot be cited as the applicable standard, and its requirement text is not public. This page separates what the record proves from what it does not.

Dates to 40.20 are from the ISO page. The 40.60 date is derived from the ballot length. Later stages are blank because ISO has not recorded them. A blank is not a prediction.

SCOPE

The public abstract, in our words

The document specifies the processes used in the engineering activities that produce requirements for systems and software products, including services, across the life cycle. It gives guidelines for applying the requirements and requirements related processes of ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and 12207. It specifies the information items those processes produce and their required contents, and gives guidelines for their format.

It applies to those who use or plan to use 15288 and 12207, to anyone performing requirements engineering whose application of the processes must conform to either framework, and to those who use or plan to use 15289 for the information items, regardless of project scope, product, methodology, size or complexity.

WHAT IT MEANS

Three things a reader should take away

  1. The current edition still applies. A draft is not a standard. If a contract, a customer or an internal procedure cites 29148 today, the citation is to the 2018 edition until the third edition is published and adopted.
  2. The scope is stable. The public abstract repeats the same purpose and the same information items. That does not prove the clauses are unchanged, but it does mean the shape of the obligation is not being replaced.
  3. Prepare the current set, not a guess. The work that will matter under either edition is the work the current edition already requires: well formed requirements, the four information items, traceability, verification methods and configuration control.

THE RECORD

The rules this is built from

Every line names its source. The 60 records are written from the published ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148:2018, in our words, with the clause cited. The revision layer is read from the public ISO stage record and its scope abstract. Where the public record is silent, the page says so.

60 RECORDS

Clause by clause, and the information items

Each page states the requirement in our words, the evidence an assessor asks for, the common gaps and what to do before the edition changes.
