Clause 9.2: General content

Current editionISO/IEC/IEEE 29148:2018, Clause 9.2Edition 3 at DIS ballotNo public change recorded

Every requirements information item carries general content before its specific sections.

What clause 9.2 asks

Every requirements information item carries general content before its specific sections. Identification includes a title, plus a revision notice that identifies the document uniquely. The revision information can include the project, the version, the release date, the approval signature, the clauses changed in this version and the versions and dates of previous releases. Front matter includes the table of contents, the list of figures and the list of tables. Definitions and references are included where the item uses them, and acronyms and abbreviations are listed so a reader is not left to guess.

Why it matters

The general content is the part a reader uses to know which document they are holding and whether it is current. It is also the evidence of configuration control. A document with no revision notice cannot be shown to be the approved version, however good its requirements are.

In the public record

No clause level change is public for this unit; the DIS keeps the title and scope, and the requirement text is not released.

What good looks like

Use one title page template across the four items. Make the revision notice a table with version, date, approver and change summary. Generate the contents and lists from the document tool so they cannot drift.

Evidence an assessor asks for

The assessor will open the revision notice and compare it with the baseline record. A mismatch is a configuration finding.

  • Title and revision notice The document title, version, release date, approver and change summary
  • Front matter The table of contents, list of figures and list of tables
  • Definitions The terms used by the item, with one meaning for each
  • References and acronyms The referenced documents, with version and date, and the acronym list

Where it commonly fails

  • The revision notice says draft on a document presented as approved
  • The table of contents is typed by hand and no longer matches the sections
  • An acronym is used in the requirements but missing from the list

What to do before the revision

Generate the front matter and the revision notice from the same source as the document. Manual front matter is the first thing to drift.
